OC Air Show – June 5-6, 2010 – Get ready…here they come!
It all begins on Friday afternoon, aircraft practice flights preparing for this week’s Ocean City Maryland Air Show. Due to the unquestioned success of the show during the past two years - this year’s show is being planned to be better yet; with even more exciting activities. And, while the planes are visible the entire length of our beach, the drops and such will be concentrated between 16th and 18th Streets and the Boardwalk (DROP ZONE). Our OC Air Show is proud to welcome back the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. Military jet demonstrations, parachute teams, civilian aerobatic performers and formation flying teams will once again soar over the beach in Ocean City. One of the more exciting demonstrations is the helicopter air-sea rescue demonstration with the bright red ‘bird’ hovering just off the beach. And here’s hoping that the little ‘hampster’ from the Air Force Reserve Unit will return trailing regularly spaced, puffs of exhaust – a cutie! A new addition this year: The U.S. Navy Seals Leap Frogs will perform a dazzling night jump at the Saturday Night Beach Party jumping over the ocean and landing in the middle of the party! Certainly all worth waiting for!
Throughout the weekend there is to be free admission into the special aerial exhibits at the Ocean City Inlet Parking area where guests are able to inspect some of the aircraft and view other exciting aircraft exhibits. The air of festivity is gearing up all along the Boardwalk. Amongst other generous contributors some primary sponsors of this inspiring event are the Town of Ocean City MD, GEICO, Pepsi and Welcome Maryland. A ‘PEACH’ of a Festival in Berlin MD
If you missed this event last Sunday, you may look forward to attending next year – and if you were one of the lucky few hundred that did attend you ARE already looking forward to attending next year. The event was the first annual PEACH FESTIVAL held at the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum, in the little sister town of Berlin, just a few miles west of the big sister, seaside resort town of Ocean City Maryland. The occasion was a historic celebration of the peach – specifically the peaches from the renowned Harrison Nurseries once located in the area. The day began with a ‘peach’ proclamation read by Mayor Gee Williams followed quickly by a ‘peach’ pie-baking contest, which coincidentally was followed by a ‘peach’ pie-eating contest! Actually, there were pie samplings available for all attendees. At 3 pm, Mike McGrath, host of ‘You Bet Your Garden’ heard on NPR Radio gave a special presentation on gardening. Throughout the entire afternoon there were
demonstrations of basket and quilt making, live music, kid’s crafts and races while adult games of croquet and bocce were being played on the beautiful lawns. Inside the museum, informational tours were offered, featuring an exhibition of Harrison Nurseries historic Nursery Catalogues and Peach labels. Also at 3 pm, children gathered and were encouraged to ‘make their own ice cream’! By this time, due to the wonderful attendance, the fresh, homemade peach ice cream made
by Worcester County‘s own local dairy purveyor – Chesapeake Farms, had run out and many had to make do with fresh black cherry or buttered pecan. Surely a woeful experience! HA!
Alas, at 6 pm the special daytime fete was over…only to be followed by the Museum’s monthly summertime ‘Concert on the Lawn’. On this evening the entertainment was provided by the popular local group – ‘Backfin Banjo’!
For more information on this and other FREE events visit the Taylor House Museum website at http://www.taylorhousemuseum.org. See you next year!

White Marlin Open 2009- August 3th thru the 7th!
The 36th Annual White Marlin Tournament begins today here in Ocean City Maryland. The currently empty (pictured here) weigh station located at Harbor Island will become the focal point for many hundreds of fishermen and onlookers each evening beginning at 4pm as the days’ catch is
weighed and measured. With the 2009 prize money expected to reach $2,500,000, this fishing contest is considered a Premier Event on the East Coast. Over 300 boats are scheduled to participate and is open to everyone just by registering. The early morning race to the canyons located many miles off the Ocean City coast is all too soon followed by the parade of
ships, many triumphant, returning through the inlet and up the bay in the evening. The Clarion Resort Fontainebleau Hotel located at 101st St. and Oceanfront will be the site of the Awards Ceremony Banquet on Saturday, August 8th from 4 until 6 pm. Come join in the festivities, see the many reasons why Ocean City MD has been proclaimed the White Marlin Capital of the World!

SHARKS! – more FREE fun in Ocean City Maryland!
As part of the Town of Ocean City summertime FREE entertainment program, interesting and educational daily lectures are offered outdoors at the foot of the Boardwalk in front of the OC Life-Saving Station Museum by the inlet on Division Street. It was Thursday – so it must be SHARKS! Arriving just minutes before the program began, we were delighted to see so many already seated; parents with children, grandparents with grandchildren along with lots of just interested, unaccompanied adults! The fact and fun-filled program began with pictures of the many species of these ancient aquatic denizens! For instance, did you know that sharks have inhabited our oceans for over 400 million years?
And, that sharks have a sand papery skin and cartilage skeleton vs. the scales and bones of most fish? That the average shark over the course of its life may have as many as 30,000 teeth? As the talk progressed samples of sharkskin and teeth were passed around allowing for real hands-on experience. Impressive throughout the presentation was the participation of the more ‘junior’ members of the audience – youngsters reeling off the Latin names for many of the species identified by the tooth filled jaws displayed by our very knowledgeable presenter this day.
The location of this activity is interesting also – the tall tower of the Life-Saving station has recently been ‘freshened’. Too, once inside the Museum there are
many displays offering a terrific overview of Ocean City – both then and now – with exhibits of shipwrecks and beachwear. There are also mermaid displays, sands from around the world, aquarium room & Davy Jones’ locker.
These programs are not to be missed – and are presented each Monday through Saturday beginning at 10:30 am. The topics vary daily and include beach safety, aquarium feeding, knot tying and all about SHARKS!

Last Thursday evening we visited the Freeman Stage during the staging of ‘Raggedy Ann & Andy’, a story which captures the imagination of young and old alike. It was terrific!
On Saturday evening, personally unable to attend, our friends gave rave reviews to a live performance of the famed Delaware Symphony Orchestra. And, we see by the calendar that an Art & Jazz Festival is in the offing. Can’t wait!

FIREMEN VISIT OUR TOWN – and a PARADE!
Everyone loves a parade – including the folks in the Ocean City Maryland area! For more than six decades our fine Town has proudly played host to the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Convention and Conference. Gathering annually, for 117 years the members have met to enjoy fellowship, attend training seminars and honor their peers. It’s obviously a close-knit community – representing the Volunteer Fire, Rescue and EMS Personnel of Maryland. Whether volunteer or paid, these brave people daily put their skills and knowledge to the ultimate test, face crises and danger together while continually holding public safety as their highest priority. This Convention, culminating with a glorious parade is their
time to share with the brotherhood. Wednesday, June 17th was no exception, the 2009 parade was again spectacular – an endless line of shiny fire trucks manned by men in uniform interspersed with marching bands playing vibrant music, historic fire trucks of yesteryear and show cars featuring honorees. Included were many young ladies sporting banners of “Miss ‘Any Town’ Maryland”. While strolling the sidewalks of the parade route, we overheard one little viewer asking her mother, “Please, I want to see the princesses” – and that’s what they looked like – in gorgeous dresses and crowns – their throne being the backseat of a convertible. Also noted – gratefully it seems that even in fighting fires today’s super technology has taken over. The newest emergency vehicles have large and very visible ‘control panels’ and although they resemble the cockpit of a spaceship – we can be secure in the knowledge that each and every function plays an
important role toward meeting our many and varied everyday emergencies and insuring YOUR continued safety.
