SHARKS! – more FREE fun in Ocean City Maryland!
As part of the Town of Ocean City summertime FREE entertainment program, interesting and educational daily lectures are offered outdoors at the foot of the Boardwalk in front of the OC Life-Saving Station Museum by the inlet on Division Street. It was Thursday – so it must be SHARKS! Arriving just minutes before the program began, we were delighted to see so many already seated; parents with children, grandparents with grandchildren along with lots of just interested, unaccompanied adults! The fact and fun-filled program began with pictures of the many species of these ancient aquatic denizens! For instance, did you know that sharks have inhabited our oceans for over 400 million years?
And, that sharks have a sand papery skin and cartilage skeleton vs. the scales and bones of most fish? That the average shark over the course of its life may have as many as 30,000 teeth? As the talk progressed samples of sharkskin and teeth were passed around allowing for real hands-on experience. Impressive throughout the presentation was the participation of the more ‘junior’ members of the audience – youngsters reeling off the Latin names for many of the species identified by the tooth filled jaws displayed by our very knowledgeable presenter this day.
The location of this activity is interesting also – the tall tower of the Life-Saving station has recently been ‘freshened’. Too, once inside the Museum there are
many displays offering a terrific overview of Ocean City – both then and now – with exhibits of shipwrecks and beachwear. There are also mermaid displays, sands from around the world, aquarium room & Davy Jones’ locker.
These programs are not to be missed – and are presented each Monday through Saturday beginning at 10:30 am. The topics vary daily and include beach safety, aquarium feeding, knot tying and all about SHARKS!

The KITE LOFT – as high as the sky!
“Come, let’s fly a kite” is a most exciting invitation when visiting Ocean City Maryland. What better way to enjoy a day at the beach? And the best place to see and buy that kite is at The KITE LOFT! Known as the premiere kite retailer of the world it began right here in downtown Ocean City 32 years ago. At several locations throughout OC, including the headquarters on 5th Street and the Boardwalk, they offer a wide, wide selection of kites, tails, windsocks and wind toys –
all sizes, shapes and colors. On any “beach day” you can’t miss seeing a variety of these wondrous and bright toys displayed along the beach or flying high in the sky out front. And they’re not just toys any longer – kiting has become a sport that draws contestants, exhibitors and visitors from around the world at various “Kiting Events” sponsored by the Kite Loft each year. Just passed, was the 30th Annual Sunfest Kite Festival which was held September 20 – 23, 2007. The next scheduled event is the 14th Annual Maryland International Kite Exposition…the Mid Atlantic Stunt Kite Championships – April 25 – 27, 2008 here in Ocean City. Don’t miss it…”Come, let’s fly a kite”!
The Kite Loft has a dynamite website with an extensive photo gallery, online shopping and a live beach cam where you can view real time kiting conditions! Remember too, when shopping for that really unique gift – this is the place!

Trimper’s Rides…for over 100 years!
Wheeeee! No trip to Ocean City Maryland is complete without spending some time “riding the rides” located at the south end of the Boardwalk beside the Inlet Village. For over 100 years the Trimper family has been providing thrills and excitement to generations of visitors. Entering through the S. Division Street and Boardwalk entrance you come upon the massive, 50’ in diameter, carousel…that was first
purchased in 1902 by Daniel Trimper. Twinkling lights, mirrors, music and motion make this “Merry go round” a real favorite for all ages. And, it is within this covered area that another all time favorite, the Dodgem cars reside. It is here that many of us perfected our solo driving skills long before we got our license! Do YOU remember? Continuing past the Dodgem’s one finds the way to the outdoor rides park.
Here’s where things get serious…with the double-loop boomerang “Tidal Wave” roller coaster, the Matterhorn and the Tilt-A-Whirl.
For families with small children there are many rides that may be shared. There are games too, with prizes awarded throughout the park and also within the nearby boardwalk arcade called Marty’s Playland. The Outdoor Rides are open mid-June through Labor Day. Call 410-289-8617 or visit the website at www.beach-net.com/trimpers/ for additional hours and days open in the spring and fall.
Jolly Roger – that famous OC MAGIC!
Here the Magic lives on! On warm summer nights while visiting the Ocean City Maryland’s south boardwalk there is nothing to compare with the familiar excitement that comes with the sights and sounds of the Jolly Roger Pier rides. Swirling and twirling high above the
Atlantic Ocean is the ride we all remember…the giant Ferris Wheel, (did ‘ja ever get stuck at the top?). At the pier there is more; the Slingshot, the Vortex, the Looping Star Coaster and the Hurricane. There are plenty of Midway games too. Add to that the smell of the Thrasher French Fries…and it’s the OC Magic!
The other Jolly Roger Amusement Park is located at 30th St. & Philadelphia Ave, bayside, has more rides…a fun filled 36 acres,
a huge park with over 30 exciting rides, a mini-golf, the Speedworld – race-car park, and that famous family waterpark – Delmarva’s largest – Splash Mountain, which offers every manner of getting wet! Something for everyone from courageous granny to timid child at either of the Jolly Roger Amusement Parks…but I prefer the Pier where the Magic lives on. For additional information including hours of operation check out the website at www.jollyrogerpark.com or phone 410-289-3477.
Frontier Town – the new, Old West!
Just a “horse shoe” toss from the beach, on Rt. 6ll in West Ocean City MD, a replica western town, a theme park if you will, from the mid 1800’s lies awaiting your pleasure. And pleasure you will receive whether for a couple of hours, a day or a week!
Upon entering Frontier Town from the very large yet convenient parking area we were immediately drawn to the water slide and the two new flume rides in the water park, which sits beside the miniature golf course which is next door
to the large gift shop which is adjacent to the Old Fashioned ice cream parlor…which sits in front of the live horse corral in front of the replica Frontier Town itself which houses the “dance hall”…confused yet? You won’t be. Everywhere, all within a very easy walking distance, are signs to guide you and friendly attendants to assist. Looking around, one cannot help but notice how clean everything is. The various water park fountains and pools sparkle; the shady woodland trails along which you may ride horses seem almost swept! There are shows and rides, including a steam locomotive and stagecoach and events scheduled all day long, something for everyone, for every age and interest.
And, a Western theme park is not all you get when you visit…there is a campground where you may hitch your trailer or pitch your tent or even rent a cabin. There are over 600 campsites, many overlooking the lovely Sinepuxent Bay where there is a long pier from which you may fish or crab. Boat dockage is available, too!
For further details and a schedule for everything that Frontier Town has to offer, visit the website at www.frontiertown.com or telephone – 1-800-228-5590.
Baja Amusements – Ride all Rides…
The sign says Baja Amusements with an ever-changing marquee below – “Ride All Rides”. Located on Rt. 50, one mile west of the Rt. 50 Bridge, the south route onto the island of Ocean City MD at the entrance to the White Marlin Shopping Center, this amusement center is far more than it first appears. There are eight Go Kart Tracks – one for every age and level of skill, Kiddie Rides, Bumper Boats, two Climbing Walls, an Arcade and a large, indoor Snack Bar all in one convenient location. One notices immediately that this facility is very clean with plenty of attendants present. In addition, there is Safari Adventure Golf – a challenging miniature course, with life sized jungle animals. The terrain for the golf course alone is very impressive! We can’t wait to go back.
