The Ocean City BUS…”avoid the fuss”!

Driving around our busy resort during the height of the tourist season is sometimes best left to the professionals. Add to that the benefits of not having to find a place to park, feed a meter or a fuel tank – and riding the convenient and low cost Ocean City MD bus system just makes good sense. For a mere $2.00 you can ride all day – up and down Coastal Highway from the Delaware border to the Boardwalk at the Inlet, or west over the Route 50 bridge to the super convenient “Park & Ride” or the White Marlin/Outlet Shopping Center in West Ocean City and back again…over and over. A terrific way to enjoy all that Ocean City has to offer anytime. Enter a bus at any one of the numerous, well-marked stops located anywhere in town, pay the driver, receive your day pass and be on your way. The buses here at the beach run frequently (every 10 minutes in season) and are clean and airy, sometimes filled with happy folks heading to and from the beach along with area workers heading off to their jobs. Many offer convenient wheelchair and handicapped access. And, a well marked “bus lane” that runs nearly the entire length of Coastal Highway makes for safe and easy access and egress for everyone. MOTOR SCOOTERS – Sleek touring at the beach!

Recently motor scooters have become a highly preferable mode of transportation for island touring while visiting Ocean City Maryland and have virtually replaced the moped (motorized bicycle) of yesteryear. Traveling by scooter allows easy access to the multitude of great entertainment sites and eateries that line Coastal Highway. It’s a fun and “cool” way to go – to “get around”, eliminating most of the hassles of seeking a parking spot during the busiest season. On island, there are several places to rent one of these sleek looking vehicles by the hour or the day. And, if you are lucky enough to already own a scooter several shops also offer repair services. As for cost of fuel…not much, an especially welcome advantage in this day of rising gasoline prices. Of course, driving a motor scooter at the beach requires the same set of regulations as for any other motorized vehicle with a few exceptions. These may be found on this website. And, be sure to ask when renting about any laws specific to Ocean City. Your vacation experience is important – help make it a good one! Always drive safely!

BIKING the BOARDS…pedal power!

I’ll always remember our early visits to Ocean City, Maryland…then and now, one of the first things to do in the morning is to head out to “bike the boards”. The 2.9 mile stretch of boardwalk is an easy ride and a great way to work off last nights’ indulgences – of perhaps a bit too many of the delicious “fun foods” offered in this town. Renting a bike is easy! Just ask at the desk for the nearest bike rental shop or check out our list below …select a vehicle – a low rider (recumbent bike), a bicycle built for two, a surrey for two or four or even a bike with a “tag-a-long” for the toddler – then just take off. Feel the breeze; cruise along viewing the beach and surf on one side and the many shops and eateries on the other. It’s easy to hop off your bike along the way and grab a quick snack. The hours for biking the boards are listed below. Note: Call ahead for open hours during the off-season – most shops open weekends – weather permitting. Wheel chair rentals are available where noted. And, for those of us who choose the easy way – the “non-peddler’s”, we have scooters…bright, shiny and new! We’re told the well-marked, bus lane along Coastal Highway is the preferred route for touring our island on mo-peds and scooters. Please ride safely!

BOARDWALK TRAM – get real OC flavor!

The very best way to catch the real flavor of Ocean City Maryland is to take a ride on the Boardwalk Tram (a train with rubber wheels). All day long and into the night the trams roll back and forth along the “boards”, a half hour long ride, the 3-mile stretch from the inlet to 27th Street allowing you to take in the sights and sounds of our fine beach town – seeing what makes Ocean City the fun place to return, year after year. During your trip you will see so much…from the families trudging across the sand, returning from a long day playing in the surf, to the famed Kite Loft kites flying overhead to folks dining outside the Phillips Beach Plaza boardwalk restaurant listening to live music, shoppers strolling along or people just sitting enjoying the fine sea air. From the Boardwalk Tram you may exit at will…just wave to the attendant – to experience something interesting you have just seen. And, you may board the same way to enjoy a comfortable ride to an intended destination. The flavors and fun of Ocean City are nearly endless; see ‘em from the Boardwalk Tram.

Trams begin operation at 10 a.m. and end at midnight seven days a week during the summer season. Trams also operate during both Springfest and Sunfest weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Weekend-only service is offered beginning Easter weekend from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through May 20. Beginning May 26, the trams are on the summer schedule of 10 a.m. to midnight 7 days per week. Weekend-only service also is offered during the month of October. This service is offered from September 29, to October 14.
Tram fare is $2.75 per person Monday through Thursday and $3.00 per person Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for one-way passage only. Discount fares are available; inquire at either tram station.
